There is just autosave at certain checkpoints. It sucks yes. But you do keep stats and items you collected since that checkpoint. But there is no manual save. When you quit, it also saves, but not at the location you are in, so when you load the game, you will be at the nearest checkpoint location.

In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is located on a very small island treehouse north of the Zimakani Rest, just south of the drug dealer's house visited in the side quest White Line.
